Study: Cellphones May Spread Superbugs In Hospitals

Cell phones belonging to hospital staff were found to be tainted with bacteria -- including the drug-resistant MRSA superbug -- and may be a source of hospital-acquired infections, according to study released Friday.

Researchers from the Ondokuz Mayis University in Turkey led by Fatma Ulger tested the phones and dominant hands of 200 doctors and nurses working in hospital operating rooms and intensive care units.

Ninety-five percent of the mobile phones were contaminated with at least one type of bacteria, with the potential to cause illness ranging from minor skin irritations to deadly disease. Read More...

Brain Cancer Linked To Youngsters Using Cellphones

An oncologist from Sweden's University Hospital found that after one or more years of cellphone use, there is a 5.2-fold elevated risk of malignant brain tumour in children who begin using mobile phones before the age of 20 years; the odds for other ages was 1.4.

OTTAWA — An international group of scientists is calling on Canada and other countries to bring in tougher safety standards for cellphone use after a Swedish team found a fivefold elevated risk of malignant brain tumours in children who begin using mobile phones before the age of 20.

The plea — and the science underlying it — is published in the forthcoming edition of Pathophysiology, devoted to peer-reviewed research about the biological effects of the global explosion of wireless technologies and devices like cellphones, cordless phones, wireless Internet and cell towers. Safety and Cell Phones: What Pregnant Women Should Know

Results from a new study suggest cell phones may pose some health risks to a pregnant woman's developing baby. Before you toss out your wireless, find out exactly what those risks may be.

When you're pregnant, you try everything you can to ensure your unborn baby's health. You avoid certain activities that might be harmful to your developing child—no hot tubs, scuba diving, or alcohol. But should you add cell phones to the list?

According to a study appearing in the July 2008 edition of Epidemiology, researchers found evidence that pregnant women who used handset cell phones, which generate low levels of non-ionizing radiation, were more likely to have children with behavior issues after birth.

The study looked at responses from over 13,000 Danish women who answered questions about their cell phone use and then about their children's behavior until the age of seven. Scientists compared the behavior of children whose mothers regularly used cell phones to those who used them infrequently or not at all. Overall, researchers found that 54 percent of children were more likely to exhibit behavior problems if their mothers were more frequent cell phone users. If the children were also early cell phone users themselves, they were 80 percent more likely to have behavioral issues.

Talk a lot on your cell phone? Beware skin rash

Safety concerns over cell phones have grown as more people rely on them for everyday communication.
Nickel surface of phones can cause dermatitis if you use them too much.

Thurs, Oct. 16, 2008, LONDON - Doctors baffled by an unexplained rash on people's ears or cheeks should be on alert for a skin allergy caused by too much mobile phone use, the British Association of Dermatologists said on Thursday.

Citing published studies, the group said a red or itchy rash, known as "mobile phone dermatitis," affects people who develop an allergic reaction to the nickel surface on mobile phones after spending long periods of time on the devices.

"It is worth doctors bearing this condition in mind if they see a patient with a rash on the cheek or ear that cannot otherwise be explained," it said. Continue reading...

Taiwanese Government Urged to Act to Dissuade Teenagers from using Cell Phones

Taipei, Oct. 7 (CNA) A civic group urged the government Tuesday to take action to dissuade children and teenagers from using mobile phones out of concern over possible electro-magnetic radiation hazards.

To back its appeal, the Taiwan Electromagnetic Radiation Hazard Protection and Control Association (TEPCA) presented results of a survey on Taiwanese children and teenagers' use of cellular phones and tests on the levels of electromagnetic radiation among mobile phonesmarketed in Taiwan.

The survey, conducted between August and October among children and teenagers aged between 6 and 18 around Taiwan, showed that 34.4 percent of polled elementary school students, 67 percent of surveyed junior high school students, and 89.6 percent of surveyed senior high school students are cell phone users.

Based on the survey, the association estimated that around 2.2 million Taiwanese children and teenagers in the 6-18 age group possess mobile phones.
It also concluded that the older the young people are, the longer they talk on the phone, and that 390,000 of them speak on the phone for an average of at least five minutes per call and 170,000 people talk for over 10 minutes per call.

Meanwhile, tests on the electromagnetic radiation levels of 33 types of mobile phones currently marketed in the country showed that more than 60 percent of the handsets release electromagnetic radiation 1 million times higher than the background level.

The association said that although cell phones have become a necessary device in modern life, industrial countries, including Britain, Germany, France, Belgium, Italy and Russia, have all advised children, teenagers and pregnant women, to refrain from using cell phones out of health concerns.

The TEPCA is a non-profit organization committed to bringing together the victims of electromagnetic radiation hazards, self-relief organizations, non-governmental organizations, individuals and groups aware of the risk to promote electromagnetic radiation hazard protection and related legislation.
